It's a mad, mad world...

There is so much, so wrong about this.

Easily the most heinous thing I've ever seen.

And we wonder why kids today are the way they are.

15? Get a life, people.

Lorinda and Jim,

I had much the same reaction. What worries me more than the excess, the waste of money, and the worship of things...is the damage being done to this adolescent girl in the relationship with her mother.

Mom is clearly overly invested in her daughter. They're enmeshed. The most evil thing about this is that what the mother is making out to be about the daughter is about the mother. Sometime in that daughter's life (maybe her 20's, if she's lucky enough to notice by then) is that she's going to realize that her choices have been all about doing what mom wants her to do.

It's the most insidious type of evil, and the hardest to address in the therapy room. Families that are clearly broken cannot deny it. Those with the means, build up entire lies around it. Scott Peck wrote a great book about it, called "People of the Lie."

I fully believe that our society does need more milestones and coming of age markers than we have, but THIS is NOT the way it is to be done.
