Advanced Statistics and Research....kill me now!
I'm sitting in Advanced Statistics. And I'm dying. The material and learning SPSS isn't difficult. The advanced concepts of research, I get. But the prof drones on and on and on. And any question, even a simple, "What menu did you click for that?" throws him off for 2 whole minutes. Then he gives a repetitive 15 minute explanation once he gets his bearings. All of this makes me want to poke. out. my. eyeballs. And, I have type like a snail because this lab has the loudest keyboards in. the. world. And SPSS, yeah, don't need to type to manipulate a data set. I'm off to download that pesky abstinence.sav data set. BAH!

I really feel for you. I had to take Undergrad Stats a few times before I could pass it. Granted, that was when they were trying to get us to do the Analysis on Excel instead of SPSS. I guess I could say that I found SPSS easier.. But Im not looking forward to taking it in graduate school. "Kill me now" is what I'll be saying too. Hang in there, you can do it!
If it makes you feel any better, you can utterly forget about 95% of this stuff once you get past graduate school. I have no memory now of how to operate SPSS (repression, perhaps?). It's just another hurdle to get past.
Oh, and my favorite piece of grad school advice: "the most important thing to get out of graduate school is yourself."
I second the getting yourself out part. I'm not so sure about forgetting 95% of it though. I just turned in copies of my proposal to my committee and needless to say, I wish I could remember everything...but I can't.
Use this less than pleasent expereience to spur yourself on to greatness when you have to speak to a group.
Thanks for stopping in. I've always had a special intolerance for bad teachers and poor public speakers. Consider it a lack of empathy, a character flaw, or what have you, but it's always puzzled me that a person could have such difficulty talking to a group of people. Yeah, that's probably a character flaw.
Agreed, it is a character flaw. But, I can cut amatures some slack. However, it's even worse when it's your profession (e.g., a professor). They should all be beaten with a porcupine.
