Important Skills to Learn Before Having Children

Can someone please explain children's shoe sizes to me? The hubs and I were buying shoes today for a thing at church, and we hemmed and hawed over shoe sizes, because between two college grads we couldn't figure much out. So we picked four pairs that "looked" like they would fit a kid in elementary school. Help me? Please?
